Hind Louali Discusses the Advantages of Being Bilingual

Speaking more than one language has many advantages beyond just being able to communicate with people from different countries. Hind Louali emphasizes this by pointing out the benefits of knowing multiple languages. And the good news is that the scientific community is now taking notice of these benefits.

Studies have shown that being bilingual can positively impact the brain, improving cognitive abilities and memory. It can also boost creativity, enhance problem-solving skills, and even delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. With all these benefits to gain, it’s no wonder that more and more people recognize the value of learning a new language. Being bilingual is not just a neat party trick but a life-changing skill that can profoundly affect personal and professional growth.

For starters, being able to speak and write in more than one language can make learning even more languages easier. If you can speak two languages already, Hind Louali says that it means that you’re pretty good at learning languages. According to recent studies, those who speak two languages find it easier to learn a third or even a fourth language.

Even discounting other factors, such as differences in IQ or reading abilities, or other cognitive aspects, being bilingual can be considered and isolated as a causal factor in increasing the chances and rate of being able to learn another language quickly.

Being bilingual also makes you better at multitasking.

Bilinguals have been noticed to be in a near-constant state of linguistic multitasking. Hind Louali explains that they have to function in a world outside their first or native language. They must switch, shift, and process several languages in real-time. Recently, it has been found that bilinguals are also better at non-linguistic multitasking. Researchers had children do two tasks. They had to match the sound to the correct animal picture, then match letters to a musical instrument. When bilingual and monolingual children did the tasks individually, they all did roughly as well. However, when they had to do the tasks together as a multitasking activity, it was discovered that bilingual children were considerably better.

Learning multiple languages can make you more empathetic since you can relate to someone else and see things as they do.

Research shows that bilinguals are better at relating to other people. Scientists have found that acquiring two languages helps the Theory of Mind development, which states that a person can attribute mental states to others. The individual can also predict and explain other people’s behavior based on those attributed mental states.
